A proponent introduced a proposal to permit mechanically graded lumber as an input to cross-laminated timber (CLT), saying the change would help Washington manufacturers use underutilized species and broaden local production. The proponent told the council the amendment "originated actually from Washington State University" and said the proposal is intended "in defense of Washington manufacturers," arguing mechanical grading would allow otherwise unused species to be incorporated into CLT production.
