Timor‑Leste highlights ASEAN accession, science summit and youth "chess for peace" program
President Jose Ramos Horta told the General Assembly that Timor‑Leste joined ASEAN on 10/26/2025, hosted a Science for Development Summit in Dili in August 2026 and will hold a "chess for peace" tournament in January 2027 to engage youth and Nobel laureates.

Jose Ramos Horta used his address to highlight Timor‑Lestes diplomatic and development initiatives. He noted the countrys accession to ASEAN on 10/26/2025 as the culmination of a 14‑year application process and said fellow ASEAN leaders provided technical assistance and capacity building to support implementation.
