The full story

The sheriff's office asked the board to authorize compensation adjustments for the chief deputy and the assistant chief deputy consistent with House Bill 1588 (effective April 10, 2026). A sheriff's office representative explained the change was intended to address pay inequities and recognized long-tenured law enforcement officers in the roles. The board discussed budget impacts and whether the sheriff might pursue an increase to his own salary from the legislature; Sheriff (speaking in the meeting) said the request was about his deputies and that any request for his salary would be handled later with the legislature.
