Ellis County budgets drawdown to expand transfer station, replace backhoe

Aug 11, 2026

County staff told commissioners the solid-waste fund shows the largest budget increase—roughly $700,000—driven by increased landfill use; about $500,000 of that increase is a drawdown from unencumbered reserves to expand the north-side transfer station and to purchase a replacement backhoe.

The full story

Darren Myers said the solid-waste fund experienced the largest noticeable increase in the draft 2027 budgets—about $700,000—largely because more customers used the county landfill. He explained most of that increase is matched by higher hauling and disposal costs and that "the biggest piece to that over 500,000 of that is the drawdown from the unencumbered balance to do an expansion to the transfer station up there on the north side to allow more room, more storage to separate and all trash, as well as to a purchase and replace a backhoe up there."
