The commission unanimously approved seven text amendments to Chapter 12 that add definitions for 'data center' and 'cryptocurrency mining facility,' delete 'technology equipment facility' as a by-right use in the LI district, and require special-use permits for those operations, with additional metrics requested by commissioners.

The Planning and Zoning Commission on Sept. 17 voted to recommend ordinance text amendments that would require special-use permits (SUPs) for all data centers and cryptocurrency mining facilities in the city's light industrial zoning district. Staff described the changes as proactive: "requiring a cryptocurrency mining facility use to obtain a special use permit," Mr. Matt Steer told the commission during the public hearing presentation.
