County home-repair programs aim to help homeowners with urgent and comprehensive fixes

A Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission specialist described two programs — the long-running Home Improvement Program (HIP) and the newer Urgent Repair Program (URP) — that provide repairs based on income eligibility and owner-occupancy; maximum assistance is $24,999 and 48 projects were completed in 2024.

Renata So to, introduced as program services specialist for the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission, gave an overview of two county home-repair programs designed to address both comprehensive and urgent homeowner repairs. The HIP program, operating for about 40 years, evaluates the whole house against HUD housing-quality standards; the URP, created about two years ago, covers urgent spot repairs limited to four components (roof, well/water hookup, septic and furnace) to speed relief for critical needs.
