Commission asks to define 'shooting range' to protect private target practice and regulate commercial ranges

Sep 9, 2026

Members recommended creating separate definitions for private target practice and organized/commercial shooting ranges so rural residents can safely sight-in rifles while commercial ranges would go into a different zone or require conditional-use review.

The full story

The commission discussed the difference between occasional private target practice on one's own land and a developed shooting range (lanes, berms, organized events or commercial trap-night operations). Commissioners agreed the ordinance should define 'shooting range' narrowly so routine backyard target practice is not unintentionally captured while organized or commercial ranges are handled differently.
