Engineers present options to reduce flooding on Mountain Street; data logging suggested
Sep 14, 2026
An SLR International scoping study showed stormwater from Hogback Mountain concentrates along Mountain Street, overwhelming inlets and causing backyard ponding; alternatives include upsizing a 24-inch run, adding catch basins, or intercepting flow upstream. The firm will refine analysis and return in October.

Brian Cote, a water-resources engineer with SLR International, told the Bristol Selectboard the Mountain Street storm drainage system carries runoff from Hogback Mountain into a paved swale and a short 24-inch pipe before connecting to a 48-inch system that continues downstream. Cote said field work found debris and sediment in catch basins and that "a 25-year storm means a four percent chance of occurrence in any given year," the scenario the team used for modeling. The draft study found surface ponding up to 12–18 inches at double catch basins under partial-blockage conditions.
