Community member pitches composting program using biosolids; staff discuss pilot and costs

Jennifer Perez, a community member and certified compost operator, presented an informational proposal advocating that the Taos Regional Landfill start a composting program to divert yard waste, food waste and biosolids from the active cell. Perez said the county’s organics stream could contain between 33% and 45% organics and that the wastewater plant currently provides an average of about 50 tons per week of biosolids at roughly 83.3% moisture, which she called a useful feedstock for composting.
