WSBA panel stresses verification duty as lawyers use AI tools
The committee’s proposed comment to RPC 1.1 would require lawyers to understand AI limits and verify AI outputs before relying on them; presenters said professional judgment cannot be delegated to an AI product.

At a committee meeting, Michelle Carney outlined the proposed comment to Rule 1.1, saying the addition expands the existing technology-competence requirement to address AI-specific risks and model limitations. "Having an understanding of relevant AI technology tools is not enough," Carney told members; "Verification is the operative duty."
