Oneida County plans safe disposal service for vapes and e‑cigarettes

Aug 24, 2026

The Solid Waste Department will begin accepting discarded vapes and e‑cigarettes as hazardous waste in plastic bags and five‑gallon containers (with sand), stored outside the hazardous‑waste building; the committee discussed a possible $1 charge and directed staff to advertise the service.

Lisa Bauknecht told the committee the department has received increasing calls about the safe disposal of vapes and e‑cigarettes, which contain lithium batteries and pose a fire risk if placed in regular trash. She described a handling procedure under hazardous‑waste protocols: place individual devices in plastic bags, store them in five‑gallon plastic containers (or larger as volume increases), add sand for protection, and stage containers outside the hazardous‑waste building for pickup by the hazardous‑waste hauler.
