County plans 2027 groundwater study; committee to consider adding metals (including uranium) testing

Portage County staff proposed targeting previous participants from the 2017 and 2022 groundwater studies for 2027 sampling, adding a metals package (uranium screen) for about $45,000 to test ~300 wells and preserve trend data across timeframes.

The full story

Staff told the committee that Portage County runs a countywide groundwater study every five years (2017, 2022, next planned 2027) and that the county has increased funding to about $53,000 for the upcoming work. The staff proposed re-contacting about 297 wells previously sampled (including 106 repeat wells) and offering a homeowners package plus a metals package that includes a uranium screen and 13 other analytes at an estimated combined cost of about $45,000 for roughly 300 properties.
