Sandy Springs reports 56.3% canopy coverage after updated AI mapping
The city presented its latest canopy-mapping approach using Nearmap aerial imagery and a proprietary VegPack AI model plus ground-truthing, reporting an updated canopy coverage figure of about 56.3% and explaining improvements in accuracy over past manual methods.

Willie Parks described the city's methodology for measuring tree canopy using high-resolution aerial imagery, an AI-based classification tool and statistical sampling with ground-truth verification. "We actually statistically model and verify that this is correct, and there is ground truthing that occurs," Parks said, adding that the iterative approach has improved accuracy compared with older manual methods.
