DOC: Washburn jail fails key classification design, county housing inmates in other counties

A Department of Corrections official told the Washburn County board the jail repeatedly fails classification standards (DOC 350). The county is meeting compliance by housing inmates out-of-county but faces staff strain and roughly $320,000 in related annual costs, officials said.

Brad Hoover of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections told the board the county jail “has been in violation of the classification standard within Wisconsin administrative code DOC 350” and that a compliance plan—initiated in late 2024—has required Washburn County to house inmates in other counties rather than mix classifications in dorms.
