The public defender/TIDC director updated commissioners on the grant‑funded defender program that began receiving cases in May 2023. The office reported several thousand closed cases since inception and estimated that providing in‑house defense for appointed cases has avoided hundreds of thousands in private‑attorney fees so far. The director asked commissioners to track two metrics closely — number of court‑appointed fee vouchers paid and jail population — to evaluate program savings over time.
