The Portage County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 19 to recognize 9‑1‑1 telecommunicators (dispatchers) as first responders in Portage County. Commissioners said the recognition is intended to formally acknowledge dispatchers’ role, support recruitment and highlight benefits such as potential retirement changes if statutory recognition follows at the state level.
