County to remove local beehive limits after state policy change
Apr 22, 2026
A county presenter said state changes bar counties from regulating the number or placement of beehives; the county will remove local restrictions (single-hive limit, 25-foot setbacks, and an Africanized-bee destruction rule) from code and administrative manuals and present an ordinance at the next regular meeting.

A presenter told commissioners that the state updated rules limiting local authority over beehives and that the county must remove its local constraints to comply. "We are not allowed to regulate the number of beehives that a property owner has or the location of the beehives," the presenter said, noting the county would remove the single-hive limit and the 25-foot setback requirement and would stop requiring local destruction of populated Africanized honeybee colonies because that is already regulated by the state.
