Caswell County IT reports December email compromise; state cyber task force engaged
The county reported an unauthorized access event on Dec. 22, 2023 affecting a staff email via VPN; the county locked the account, scanned devices, engaged the NC Joint Cyber Security Task Force and filed an IC3 report, and applied for the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program.

Jason Benson, Caswell County IT director, reported to the board on Feb. 5 that an employee email account showed unauthorized access beginning in December 2023. County staff locked the account, reviewed access logs showing connections from multiple IP addresses, secured and scanned the device for malware, and imposed conditional access limits during the incident response.
