The Cherokee Public Schools Board approved a Strong Readers Act policy to formalize early-reading assessments and interventions across the district.
Administrators said the policy replaces the former Reading Sufficiency framework and establishes a structured approach: universal screening, a 90-minute core reading block and additional intervention for students who score at lower percentile ranks. The district’s reading interventionist, Miss Smith, will provide 30 minutes of targeted intervention every school day for students who score in the first through tenth percentile, administrators said.
The policy spells out assessment cadence and tiered intervention so staff can identify students who need extra support and document progress over the school year. Board members voted to approve the policy during the meeting.
Superintendent and school staff noted the district already uses intervention staff and programming and that codifying the process allows consistent implementation across classrooms.
