Board appoints three student members and disability representative to DEIB task force

The Pullman School District Board of Directors voted Sept. 24 to appoint three student members to the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) task force and to add a disability-awareness, access and inclusion representative, approving the top-ranked applicant for that role.
Board liaison Amanda Tanner explained the recommendation to increase student representation from two to three to ensure student perspectives are consistently present at meetings, noting that students are highly involved and attendance can vary. "I felt like they all had very unique perspectives... this also kind of ensures that we always have a few students present at the meetings," she said.
The board considered the applicants' rankings and moved the item from discussion to action to accommodate scheduling and upcoming task-force meetings and the district's Community Connections event on Oct. 2. Director Nathan moved to appoint the three students and the top-ranked candidate, Megan I. Itami (identified in the ranking list), for the disability-awareness representative; the motion passed by voice vote with no opposition recorded.
Board staff said they will contact the appointed students and the representative and coordinate schedules with the task force and the board liaison; Amanda Tanner requested to be copied on outreach communications.
