Cheltenham SD, township plan speed cushions and raised crosswalks; estimated cost $123,000 to be split

At the May 6 Finance Committee meeting, district staff described a traffic-calming plan developed with the township to address dangerous driver behavior near several elementary schools.
The proposal calls for speed cushions, refreshed pavement markings and raised crosswalks at specific school-area locations. The township provided an estimate of about $123,000 to install the measures if township crews perform the work; the township requested the cost be split with the school district and the district suggested using bus-stop enforcement fines as the local funding source.
Board members asked practical questions about locations and drop-off configurations. Staff said not all roads around schools are township-controlled and that some locations may require additional coordination with state or county roadway authorities. Staff also provided a rough map indicating speed cushions on Front Street, two cushions and an elevated crosswalk at Glenside, cushions near Myers, and cushions with a raised crosswalk at Winco.
Several board members and a township commissioner who has worked on the project were thanked for their collaboration; no final funding vote was taken. Administration said a formal recommendation for a district contribution would be brought forward for board approval and that the proposed district contribution would be less than the prior year’s bus-patrol revenue.
