Delaware County marks National 4‑H Week; student and staff highlight youth programs

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors recognized National 4‑H Week during its Oct. 12 meeting, with Cornell Cooperative Extension 4‑H staff updating the board and a student member describing how the program has helped develop leadership and communication skills.

Shelley Johnson introduced Corinne Tompkins, 4‑H program manager for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Delaware County, who thanked the board for passing a resolution recognizing National 4‑H Week. Tompkins said local 4‑H clubs and volunteers were being highlighted during the week; she noted that enrollment opened Oct. 1 and urged supervisors to help distribute information in their towns.

Tompkins introduced Maria Collins, identified as a freshman at OCA Montego Christian Academy and a five‑year 4‑H member. Collins told the board that 4‑H taught her communication and social skills she uses at school and in her role as a class representative. "I would not have such good communication skills if it was not for 4‑H and all that 4‑H has taught me," Collins said. She also said 4‑H teaches respect for differences and inclusion.

Tompkins said Delaware County’s 4‑H camp and volunteer network support youth activities countywide and thanked the board for ongoing support. She noted a national campaign that included lighting Niagara Falls green for 4‑H Week. The presentation did not include requests for specific county funding during the meeting.
