Lewis Central board votes to continue instructional support levy

On Oct. 6, 2025, the Lewis Central Community School District Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt a resolution continuing the district’s five-year instructional support levy.

The board opened a public hearing on the levy and received an explanation from district staff before taking the vote. District officials described the levy as a recurring revenue authority most Iowa school districts use to support general-fund instructional expenses, with the largest share typically paying teacher salaries.

Superintendent (title used in meeting) explained that the levy is renewable every five years by a simple majority of the board and that the district has used the levy for many years to support curriculum and staffing. The board invited public comment and, after a short period with no substantive public testimony about the levy, closed the hearing and moved to adopt the resolution.

The resolution to continue participation in the instructional support program was approved by recorded vote with the following board members voting yes: Missus Scheffel; Mister Sorensen; Mister Sturm; Miss Atkins; Missus McDaniel; Missus Peterson; and Mister Wright. The vote was unanimous.

District officials said the levy revenue posts to the general fund and is restricted by policy to instructional purposes such as curriculum and staffing; no new tax rate or payer-specific change was described at the hearing.

The board’s action keeps the existing instructional support levy authority in place for the district for another five-year term. The superintendent and district staff did not present any separate funding allocation or program changes tied to this renewal during the meeting.

The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 20, 2025.
