Facilities update: new middle school opened, multiple CNR and LEA projects underway
Summary

Facilities staff reviewed the district's summer work and the planned capital and LEA projects for the 2025'26 budget year. The list included repurposing material from the demolished middle school, security and privacy film installations, HVAC and split-unit placements, playground ADA matting, interior lighting upgrades and an indoor air-quality assessment required by state legislation.
Claudio Pisano summarized the summer accomplishments and upcoming work: "We closed and knocked down an old school, and we opened up a brand new one with all the staff moving in there and assisting on getting all those people acclimated to a brand new environment," Pisano said. He described repurposing furniture, fixtures and equipment from the old middle school to benefit other district buildings.
Key items discussed and project status: split AC installs and nurse/kitchen unit replacements (some repurposed from the old middle school), phase-two classroom blinds replacement (planned in yearly $50,000 increments), grade-2 bathroom sink replacements and an added K-wing bathroom scheduled for the December break, purchase and installation of ADA matting for a WIS swing set, and outdoor blacktop work completed for a west playground. Pisano noted the blacktop work cost substantially less than earlier estimates: "The original cost to do that was a $100,000. We agreed with the town to collaborate to get that done, and it cost us 13,000," he said.
Auditorium lighting and stage fixtures require additional vendor quotes; Pisano said specialty stage lighting vendors are limited and that the district may need to issue an RFP to get accurate pricing. The board was also told that a thermal roof-imaging study is in progress to identify sections of roof that may be failing and to allow targeted repairs rather than wholesale roof replacement, a strategy Pisano said can save money and still secure warranties for larger patches.
The district is preparing an indoor air-quality assessment and plans to meet the state requirement for phased completion (20% of buildings per year) ahead of the July 1, 2026 deadline. Other items in process include installation of security swipe access at office entry points, rooftop unit refurbishment, interior and exterior lighting upgrades, and cellular transmission upgrades to improve district alarm and notification capabilities.
Ending: The board requested more detail on funding sources for each project, firm timelines where available and routine written updates. Facilities staff agreed to provide a schedule of update reports to the board (suggested cadence: September, January, April).
