District plans pilot of executive-function curriculum for third graders during WIN block

The Haddonfield Board of Education on Jan. 8 received a curriculum update recommending a district pilot of an executive-functioning curriculum in grade 3.
District curriculum staff described the program as instruction in study skills, organization, planning and monitoring progress. Staff said the lessons will be delivered during the district—s WIN ("what I need") block and will pilot with third grade this year, with plans to expand to additional grades based on feedback.
Presenters said the program was piloted previously with a small fifth-grade group and that pre- and post-survey data from that pilot showed "excellent growth," though staff cautioned the sample size was small. District staff told the board they plan targeted supports: survey-based identification of students who need more intensive group work, tutorial-period reinforcement in middle school, and professional development for staff. The program—s author is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the district—s November professional-development day.
Curriculum maps for physics, multivariable calculus pathways and other revised maps will be posted on the district curriculum page and are scheduled for formal board review and approval in October, staff said. The executive-function curriculum and related curriculum maps will appear on the October board cycle for review.
Next steps: staff will seek board review and approval of curriculum maps and the executive-function pilot in October, deliver staff professional development in November, and pilot the lessons in third grade during the 2025–26 school year.
