Commission authorizes posting for assistant county manager position with $70K–$85K range

Following a closed-session personnel discussion, the Colfax County Commission on Sept. 16 authorized the county manager to post an assistant county manager position with a salary range of $70,000 to $85,000. The Commission voted by roll call to approve posting the job and begin recruitment.
The manager described responsibilities for the role as broader than a finance specialist and advised commissioners the position will include oversight of state compliance (Open Meetings Act, IPRA, and related obligations) in addition to finance and staff supervision. Commissioners discussed title alternatives but ultimately supported the assistant county manager designation to reflect a broader scope of duties.
Why it matters: The county previously reduced staff and had relied on temporary or contracted support (JAG) for certain financial functions; commissioners said the new role is intended to restore capacity for finance, compliance and managerial backup in the manager’s absence. The posting will be public and will proceed as a post-and-hire process.
Outcome: Commission approved posting; staff will return with candidates and a recommended hiring path per normal hiring protocols. The posting will be handled by the manager’s office and follow any applicable personnel rules.
