Colfax County requests multiple road-fund extensions, orders culverts and cattle guards

Colfax County commissioners voted Sept. 16 to submit extension requests for multiple cooperative agreements under the Local Government Road Fund so the county can finish projects delayed by heavy summer rain. The extensions cover cooperative agreements L400661, L400668 and L400675 and were approved by roll call votes.
Why it matters: Multiple roads experienced washouts, damaged culverts and erosion during summer storms. County road staff said several roads—Laughlin Peak Road, French Track and Rose Road among them—have suffered repeated washouts and that some culvert inlets are failing and creating sinkholes.
Road Department staff said they are prioritizing C-4 road spots with significant washouts and intend to order culverts and five cattle guards immediately to be ready for installation. Commissioners emphasized the need to show progress—placing ordered culverts and cattle guards on site when possible—and to plan for right diameters and installation while balancing staffing and weather constraints.
Outcome: The Commission approved the extension resolutions and encouraged staff to proceed with ordering culverts and cattle guards and to document progress for the state. Staff noted they will attempt to complete as much work as possible by the Dec. 31 deadline but asked for the extensions because weather and staffing shortages have delayed work.
