Commission removes automatic disqualification for applicants with three moving violations

The Berkeley County Deputy Sheriff Civil Service Commission voted to remove a rule provision that barred examination or certification of any applicant convicted of three or more moving violations in the prior 24 months (section 4.1.l). Commissioners and the sheriff's office discussed the provision's consequences and practical issues: some applicants may not know the technical definition of "moving violation" and investigators can now verify the nature and timing of citations rather than apply an automatic bar. Commissioners said removal of the blanket prohibition lets investigators present vetted findings to the commission for a discretionary decision on eligibility. A motion to amend section 4.1 by striking the three-moving-violations language was made, seconded and carried by voice vote; staff will remove the provision from the rules and proceed with case-by-case background review practices going forward.
