Mayor and council honor Councilor Melanie Geer with proclamation, Geer urges renewed focus on Rosedale

The City of Homewood on Monday presented a proclamation recognizing Councilor Melanie Geer for five years of service to the community, and Geer used her remarks to encourage future council action on neighborhood revitalization.

Mayor/President Jones read the proclamation, citing Geer's committee service on public works and special issues and her role as liaison to the Arts Council. "The mayor and city council ... hereby express our sincere appreciation and thanks to Melanie Geer for her distinguished service to the community," the proclamation said in part.

Councilor Melanie Geer thanked colleagues and constituents and urged the next council to prioritize a "city-led effort, with Rosedale input" to support Rosedale's revitalization while honoring leaders from the neighborhood's history. She said she regretted not having been able to achieve a consensus path forward for Rosedale during her term and said: "My hope is that this new council will prioritize a city led effort, with Rosedale input, of course, to provide some sort of resources and strategies that can help put the neighborhood on a sustainable course forward for the next hundred years."

Council members and the mayor praised Geer's diligence, questioning, and willingness to pursue details before deciding on issues. The council adopted the proclamation and offered the councilor best wishes for future endeavors.
