District equity task force reports recommitment to DEI work, distributes survey for next steps

Members of the Bethlehem Area School District’s Task Force for Excellence through Equity reported to the school board on Oct. 20 about their Oct. 10 meeting, saying the task force reviewed progress, noted ongoing needs and distributed an equity survey to gather broader input.
Task force members described a presentation from Doctor Silva and district staff reaffirming the district’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work and cited a substantive conversation about what is working, what is not working and areas for improvement across program services that serve students and families.
The task force report said the stakeholder group that participated in the meeting included representatives from Lehigh University, the public library, parents and district staff. Members in attendance completed the equity survey during the meeting, and an outreach email was sent afterward asking other stakeholders to complete the survey to produce additional data for planning and follow-up.
Reporters to the board said the task force will analyze survey findings and hold further discussion about next steps. The task force noted recent work in special education services and praised a recent Hispanic Heritage program as a successful example of community engagement.
No formal board action was recorded on the task force report during the Oct. 20 meeting; the item was delivered as an informational update.
