Story County proclaims August 2025 as Emergency Management Awareness Month

Story County supervisors adopted a proclamation on Aug. 19 recognizing August 2025 as Emergency Management Awareness Month and urged residents to develop emergency plans and supply kits. The proclamation, brought forward during the board’s regular meeting, states that “emergency management professionals serve a critical role in preparing for, responding to, recovering from, and mitigating the impacts of disasters” and encourages partnerships across government, nonprofits, businesses and the public.

The proclamation notes the importance of personal and community preparedness and lists steps residents can take, including developing family emergency plans, assembling supply kits and staying informed about local hazards. Supervisor Merten moved the proclamation; the motion was seconded and adopted by voice vote. The board recessed briefly afterward to take a photo of supervisors with the proclamation.

The action is ceremonial and carries no direct funding or regulatory requirements; it recognizes local emergency management personnel and is intended to support public outreach and preparedness efforts during August 2025.
