Krista Breach, communications assistant, presented background on the vacancy and said the commission currently included three Army veterans and one Air Force veteran. Breach noted state code language that, “if possible, each member of the commission shall be a veteran of a different military branch,” and asked the board to consider branch balance when filling the open seat.
County Attorney staff research (Nathan Peterson) advised that, given the current composition, appointing a Navy veteran would fulfill the statutory guidance if a Navy applicant had applied. One supervisor expressed frustration that recent state changes eliminated previous gender‑balance guidance and that the branch requirement could exclude otherwise highly qualified candidates.
Supervisors asked staff to circulate applicant materials and return a recommendation for appointment at the next formal meeting.
