Board recognizes math team, future teachers and student projects

The Harlem Unit District 122 Board of Education opened its meeting with student presentations and recognition of recent academic and extracurricular accomplishments.
Principal Doc Moreland brought students from Marquette Elementary to lead the pledge and be recognized; the board later heard from Harlem High School math team members and advisors who had returned from the state math competition in Bloomington. High‑school teacher and team advisor Miss Gupta described the season and listed individual and team placements. Students identified by name included Mia, Ben, Calvin, Jacob and Antonio; the presenters said some students qualified for individual events (algebra I, geometry, pre‑calculus) and an eight‑person calculator team competed at state.
The board also recognized students who placed in state competitions for children’s literature and public speaking. Monica Pergozzo, a student who delivered a speech in Spanish at state and placed second, read portions of her speech to the board. “Every child that lives in The United States has the right to live in school regardless of their immigration status,” Monica said during the excerpt she presented.
Board members praised the students and staff. Mike Sterling, the district treasurer and business and operations lead, told the students, “On behalf of the board and our community, congratulations to all of you.” Trustees encouraged continued participation in academic clubs and said district officials will share upcoming screening dates for student documentary work.
The meeting also included brief recognition of state winners in art and other competitions; board members named teachers and administrators who supported the students’ work and urged the community to celebrate the achievements.
