Gilbert recognizes state representative after $5 million appropriation for town well projects

Gilbert — The Gilbert Town Council on Aug. 26 presented a certificate of appreciation to Representative Loren Hendricks for securing a $5 million state appropriation to support the town’s efforts to develop additional well sources.

Mayor Scott Anderson introduced Hendricks and described the appropriation as part of the recent legislative session. Anderson said the funds will help the town pursue groundwater sources and “help ensure our portfolio remains secure,” a priority cited in the council’s recent study-session discussion about water supply.

Representative Hendricks, who served previously on the Gilbert council, credited close coordination with town officials for the appropriation. “I frequently have my colleagues ask me, how did you pull this off? … I call him and I say, hey, I'd like to have a meeting with you,” Hendricks said, referring to outreach with Mayor Anderson and town staff. He singled out town staff liaison Rob Borer and Town Manager Patrick Banger for help in supplying timely information during the legislative process.

Why it matters: The council framed the appropriation as a near-term tool to expand Gilbert’s ability to find and deliver potable groundwater, a policy priority as Colorado River supplies and regional hydrology tighten.
