County approves resolution to join DNR aggregate resource mapping program

Pipesaukee County commissioners voted Sept. 9 to adopt a resolution authorizing the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to conduct countywide mapping of aggregate resources, a project county staff described as a free service to identify potential gravel sources.
Nick Bergman, county engineer, said DNR staff offered the service and emphasized there was no cost to the county. Commissioners reviewed resolution language (referred to in the meeting as Resolution 59‑23‑25) and asked a minor edit: add the word “resources” after “natural” in the second paragraph. Bergman agreed to correct the wording and format the resolution to match county templates before signing.
Commissioners discussed who would be able to access the finished map. Bergman said he expected the county would distribute copies on request and that the county would treat the map as a public product; he also said the DNR might use satellite and soil dataset resources to produce the map. The board approved the resolution by voice vote.
Bergman told the board he thought the DNR mapping could be useful because some counties face difficulty finding aggregate supplies, and the mapping could identify pits or areas with potential gravel resources.
The board did not place restrictions on public access in the resolution as presented; Bergman said he would clarify access and finalize the resolution language prior to submitting it to the DNR.
