Historic district commissioners were briefed on local Certified Local Government grant work, including tours of the Beach House and the Presbyterian Church, and were told the State Historic Preservation Office has funding only through October.
Coldwater Downtown Historic District Commission members were updated June 11 on local Certified Local Government (CLG) grant work and told the State Historic Preservation Office has funding only through October.
Erin, historic preservation staff, told commissioners she did not have finalized drawings for the Beach House CLG grant and said, “I had hoped to have a fantastic update for you as I was promised by the close of business. However, they had to update some of the drawings and diagrams, so I don't have anything on the current Beach House CLG grant.” She added that she expected to know more soon about the Presbyterian CLG grant and that SHPO staff “do have funding through October.”
The update was informational only; no vote or directive was taken on the grants. Erin reported that SHPO staff visited Coldwater to tour the Beach House and the Presbyterian Church so those sites could be assessed. She said Thornton Thomas came to perform an assessment during that visit.
Commission members also received a brief account of the Michigan historic-preservation conference in Sault Ste. Marie, attended by a commissioner. The report summarized several breakout sessions, including presentations on restored train depots in Detroit, Cincinnati and Buffalo and on converting larger historic schools to housing; the commissioner noted local possibilities such as the Roosevelt Building, which is currently for sale.
Minutes from the commission's March 12 meeting were approved by voice vote during the June 11 meeting; the commission recorded a motion to accept the minutes, received a second and the chair said, “All those in favor, aye… Motion carries.” The motion was procedural and unrelated to the CLG grant update.
No public comments were offered, and no new project reviews or formal actions on CLG grants were taken at the meeting. Commissioners did not state any specific follow-up deadlines at the session; Erin said only that she expected additional information about the Presbyterian grant soon.
