Elementary school construction continues; staff set 2027 completion target and outline moves

Prince Edward County Public Schools staff updated the board on progress at the new elementary school and said construction remains on target for a 2027 opening despite weather‑related delays.
A presenter told the board that much of the building is under roof and that crews are addressing roof leaks identified after recent rain. Staff said contractors completed exterior gutter work and are continuing interior work. "The rain has slowed us up just a little bit. But now that most of it's under roof, we are doing okay," the presenter said.
The presentation said the project is targeting a 2027 completion date. Staff told the board the new bus drop‑off loop is planned as a three‑lane funnel that narrows to one lane at the loop exit; the district aims to open the drop‑off loop in time for the new school opening. During the construction and transition work, four mobile classroom units will remain in use and will be removed as permanent classrooms come online. Staff said in January they will stage a move that will include seven classrooms and the library; administrators described the move as a significant coordination task that will include boxing library materials.
Board members toured the site with the Board of Supervisors earlier in the week, staff said. The board asked for a district tour of the new building for board members as well.
No new budget adjustments or change orders were recorded in the meeting discussion; staff said they would continue to provide biweekly construction updates to the board.
