Senate approves expedited permitting framework for advanced nuclear projects

The Louisiana Senate on April 28 passed Senate Bill 127, which establishes a permitting parity program for advanced nuclear power generation projects.
Sponsor Senator Alex Bass said the bill allows public utilities to apply for expedited environmental permits for small modular reactor projects if applications include a letter of collaboration with federal entities like the U.S. Department of Energy or the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. “This bill aims to align Louisiana's permitting processes with federal standards, thereby reducing redundancy and red tape,” Bass said.
Senators did not engage in extended questioning on the floor. Bass moved final passage and the chamber approved SB127 by voice vote; the clerk recorded 39 ayes and 0 nays.
Sponsor noted the bill's intent to accelerate permitting timelines where federal-state collaboration exists, with the goal of encouraging deployment of advanced nuclear technologies.
