Chambers County to apply for Texas Broadband Equity Access and Deployment funds

Chambers County commissioners voted May 13 to authorize an application to the Texas Broadband Development Office for the Texas Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program.
A county staff member told the court the program prioritizes rural areas and that updated mapping and household-level data improved the county's odds of funding. "It wants to focus on rural counties, and there's a bigger opportunity of us receiving funds," the staff member said.
Staff described the statewide program as a large funding pool and said the county has persistent areas where households rely on public Wi‑Fi at libraries because they lack reliable home service. Commissioners said extending broadband would support remote work, schoolwork and economic development in the county's unserved and underserved areas.
Commissioner Dagley moved to apply; Commissioner Hammond seconded. The court approved the motion by voice vote.
Staff said the application will require updated field verification and community input and that further court actions would be requested if the county is invited to negotiate a grant or contract.
