Board approves Google Education Plus as district learning management system

After a committee review, the board voted to adopt Google Education Plus districtwide and directed staff to support a voluntary transition with Schoology available through the coming year to ease migration.
The USD 231 Board of Education on May 12 approved moving to Google Education Plus as the district’s learning management system (LMS), after a year-long review and pilots involving teachers and administrators.
Ed-services staff presented comparative evaluations from a cross-district committee that reviewed Google Education Plus and Schoology across multiple categories and recommended Google Education Plus for better integration with the district’s existing Google Drive, lower overall cost, and simplified implementation. “We believe that narrowing down to 1 product will be best for everyone,” the presenter said.
The district will allow a yearlong transition period: Schoology remains under contract for the coming year, giving high-school staff and others time to migrate materials. The board passed the motion to adopt Google Education Plus without opposition.
Staff said the move should reduce parent and student confusion caused by multiple platforms across grade levels and will make curriculum writing and districtwide content easier to manage. Implementation details, training and a timeline will be developed over the summer and presented to the board.
