The Windcrest City Council directed staff March 25 to prepare an ordinance to amend Chapter 12 of the City Code to allow the fire marshal’s duties to be performed by a qualified designee.
A council member explained the proposal followed earlier comments that the city had only one listed fire marshal and that an absence or incapacity could leave essential functions unaddressed. Staff said rather than changing one section, the amendment would appear in the definitions so the designee language applies consistently across the code. The proposed language would permit either the fire marshal or the fire marshal’s qualified designee — someone who meets the same qualifications and is formally designated — to perform duties that the code assigns to the fire marshal.
Council members endorsed the approach and a motion was made to bring back an ordinance for formal consideration and readings. Staff will draft the ordinance language and return it for the council’s formal first reading and subsequent proceedings; no final ordinance vote occurred at the March 25 meeting.
