Commission awards architect/engineering contract to McKinley; staff cites low change orders and project software

The Harrison County Commission voted March 19 to award the county’s architect and engineering contract to McKinley Architecture & Engineering following presentations by three firms.
Danny Hamrick, director of maintenance, told commissioners the review panel (himself, Laura, Charlotte and Shell) met with all three firms by Zoom and recommended McKinley unanimously. Hamrick said the firm offers in‑house architects (others did not), has won multiple industry awards, maintains a low change‑order rate (typically 1–2 percent), and uses a software platform that lets county staff track project progress in real time. “After hearing all 3 presentations, I mean, they're all 3 good companies... I think McKinley stood out above the other,” Hamrick said.
Commissioners approved the award by voice vote. Staff indicated the contract will include space‑utilization work for the courthouse and other facility assessments; once executed, the firm will begin the space-utilization study as part of its scope.
