Board honors outgoing members, recognizes students and staff
Summary
The board recognized student leaders and staff, presented an IASB recognition to board member Steve Fiorentino and honored outgoing board members Dr. David Scarpino and Emmanuel Thomas with remarks from the superintendent, board colleagues and community members.
The District 300 board opened the April 22 meeting with student presentations and multiple recognitions, then paused later in the meeting to formally acknowledge two outgoing board members.
Student recognitions
Students from Dundee Highlands Elementary led the Pledge of Allegiance and were recognized for a school initiative called the School of Rock. Principal Doug Corey introduced eight students who earned “caught being a rock star” tickets and led the pledge. Liberty Elementary Principal Stephanie Watson highlighted a student, Maya Coppola, who founded a crochet club with more than 40 participants; Watson described the club as an example of student voice and leadership.
Staff and board recognitions
The board recognized Administrative Professionals Day (April 23) and congratulated Gulfview Elementary for being named a Promising Practices PLC at Work school by Solution Tree. The board also presented a framed certificate to board member Steve Fiorentino for earning “Established Board Leader” status from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB).
Farewells to outgoing members
The board formally thanked Dr. David Scarpino (board president) and Emmanuel Thomas for their service. Community member Michael Williamson delivered a prepared tribute to Dr. Scarpino and Emmanuel Thomas during the public participation segment, noting Scarpino’s long career in education and recounting personal anecdotes from school visits. Board members and Superintendent Dr. Smith each offered remarks of thanks; Dr. Smith summarized Scarpino’s and Thomas’ district service histories and praised their contributions. Both outgoing members were applauded by staff and attendees; the board held a reception for them before the meeting.
