Forestry staff hire, county forest work limits and elevated fire danger highlighted

The Ashland County Forestry and Recreation Committee was told the county is on track to meet its county-forest hours obligations for the fiscal year and that the forestry program has accepted an offer for a new Ashland County liaison who is expected to start June 2.

Forestry staff reported they are currently about 80% of their hours obligation for the year and expect to complete contractual obligations, aided by a temporary ranger liaison and an upcoming experienced hire. Staff said the new hire has previously performed this role in another county and should be able to "hit the ground running."

Committee members were also told of a recent directive limiting certain wildlife openings and extensive trail work on county forest lands. Staff said that, because of how public-recreation (PR) funds can be used, the county was advised that work on the county forest must be minimal until further guidance is finalized; staff plan a work meeting to set guidance and a project list for the coming summer and fall.

Separately, forestry staff warned the community that fire danger in northern Wisconsin has risen to very high for the next eight to 10 days and asked residents to report unauthorized burning. Staff noted burn bans have been in effect for the prior two days and may continue while fuels remain dry.

No formal committee action was taken on staffing, the draft project list, or the work restrictions; the briefing was informational and staff said they will meet with county staff to finalize a project work plan and funding priorities.
