Committee discusses warrants data, requests coordination with sheriff’s office

Committee members on May 13 reviewed countywide active-warrant counts and data-collection challenges and asked the sheriff’s office to coordinate future reporting.
Raelene said she circulated warrant tallies she ran earlier in the year and noted overall counts appear to be trending downward. A sheriff’s office representative asked that the sheriff’s office and county staff coordinate so jurisdictions are not asked to produce duplicate reports. The sheriff noted a prior report showed about 8,100 active warrants countywide a few months earlier.
The packet included a table with jurisdiction breakdowns but lacked Bellingham’s 2024 date for comparison; Raelene said Bellingham’s 2024 data was not received so the spreadsheet shows the 2024 column in red. County staff explained that changes to the local BIT reporting system, password and outage issues following an ATSI outage have made some more detailed warrant queries harder to run; some jurisdictions are still learning the updated report procedures.
Why it matters: accurate and timely warrant data helps the task force track enforcement patterns, identify warrant reasons and target diversion or outreach programs. Members asked the sheriff’s office and court administrators to coordinate a standard data run and to assist smaller jurisdictions with BIT training so future packets include consistent year-over-year comparisons.
No formal action was taken. Jake volunteered to help recreate earlier reports; staff agreed to share the datasets they already have with the sheriff and with behavioral-health partners planning a joint meeting next month.
