Sheriff Troy Goodenough presented the Monroe County Sheriff's Office 2024 annual report, highlighting a rising call volume, recruitment, training and new programs and equipment.
“Throughout the entire year, much was accomplished,” Goodenough told commissioners, saying the office handled more than 41,000 calls for service in 2024 and hired 15 deputies and 13 corrections officers during the year. He described investments in training — including de‑escalation instruction and mental health awareness — and new equipment such as ballistic shields in patrol cars and a new watercraft for marine operations.
Goodenough described several programs the office runs or expanded: a victim services unit, medication‑assisted treatment evaluations for inmates, a jail GED program with no recidivism in participants, a tether program that reduced jail stays and saved an estimated $10,530 in 2024, and partnerships with local governments and nonprofits for community work and prisoner reentry supports.
On jail capacity, commissioners noted recent trends showing periods when the average daily population exceeded capacity. Goodenough said the main jail was at roughly 91% capacity on a recent Monday and described factors that affect population, including bond‑reform and COVID‑era policy changes.
After the presentation, the board voted to accept the sheriff's annual report. Later in the agenda, the sheriff requested an additional sergeant position for his staffing plan. Commissioners moved and seconded the request; roll call approved the addition.
Goodenough closed by outlining planned 2025 priorities including continued de‑escalation training, a family services unit at the jail, plumbing and generator upgrades, and equipment for the mounted division and school resource officers.
