Human Relations Commission selects work-plan training from state program manager

The Lexington Human Relations Commission voted March 3 to request a state-led training focused on developing the commission's annual work plan.
HRC staff told commissioners that Gene Troy, program manager at the North Carolina Human Relations Commission, offers four training options and prefers in-person sessions. “So there are 4 different trainings he can come in and do … local human relations commissions developing a local human relations commission work plan or crisis management training,” HRC staff said.
The training choice came after commissioners discussed which session would best prepare the commission to complete its required annual work plan under its bylaws. Commissioner Pamela McAfee moved to select the work-plan training; Commissioner Pam Harvey seconded. Chairperson Dr. Charlotte Edwards called for a voice vote and said the motion passed.
Commissioners noted scheduling and cost considerations. Staff said Troy has previously conducted an orientation session for the commission and that most commissions in the state fall under his purview. Commissioners discussed whether training materials are available online and whether the training could be combined with a planning retreat; several commissioners said they prefer an in-person session so Troy can answer questions directly. HRC staff noted the commission's budget would cover training costs if necessary.
The commission directed staff to contact Troy to confirm availability and to place scheduling details on a future agenda for final approval. The vote to request the work-plan training was made by Commissioner Pamela McAfee, seconded by Commissioner Pam Harvey, and approved by voice vote.
