New county jail construction advances as cells and interior systems installed

County construction managers told the Board of County Commissioners that the new county jail is moving quickly and is now weather‑tight.
Paul Fernandez of the construction team said the building’s exterior shell is complete and interior work is progressing, with mechanical connections, masonry dividing walls and mezzanine framing underway. Joe Mirack, another project representative, told the board the modular cell installation was the month’s major milestone: "We have a total of 64 cells. Forty of them are 4‑person cells… and the other 24 2‑person cells were set in about a day and a half." He described the crane‑set, welded modular installation process and said the pace of interior work accelerated after the cells were set.
Project staff showed aerial photos and mock‑ups and said mechanicals, roofing and exterior block are nearing completion. Commissioners toured the site about a month earlier and praised the progress.
No change orders or schedule slips were reported at the presentation; staff said they will return with regular progress updates and noted the facility will also house the jail kitchen and other operational spaces.
