A board member said parents reported children who live in the district were not always able to attend Summit and that the current application process feels unfair to some families. Several board members suggested ending the open application in favor of assigning students by residency or using a district-managed random selection that prioritizes siblings.
Administrative cautions District staff cautioned reconfiguring campuses — for example assigning grades differently across schools — is a large operational task that affects transportation, staffing, testing and accountability. The superintendent said reconfiguration ‘‘can be done’’ but requires substantial planning and would need to be phased in rather than implemented quickly.
Next steps Board members asked administration to analyze options, including sibling priority and a residential assignment system, and to return with a plan and timeline. One board member suggested staff prepare proposals for the June meeting or the board retreat, including the impact on state test accountability and logistics.
