Highway department reports progress on County Z, bridge work and equipment purchases
Summary
Adams County highway staff updated the committee April 10 on County Z right-of-way clearing and bridge work, shop repairs, crack-filling operations, equipment acquisitions (a 2025 chassis and storm-extreme units) and staffing changes.
Pat, highway department staff, gave a multi-item operations report covering active projects, maintenance and equipment.
On County Z, staff reported substantial clearing of right-of-way and retention-pond areas between County F and State Highway 21; stump removal and restoration will follow. County Z construction bids have been received, contracts executed and work is expected this summer with a tentative June start dependent on weather and contractor schedules.
On County J and other roads, crews have been performing crack filling (band-sealing existing cracks rather than routing), brush and tree removal on State Highways 82 and 13, and targeted shoulder repairs. Pat said the County J bridge project required some additional tree removal and the installation of bird netting under a bridge deck to deter barn swallows before contractor work proceeds.
Pat described building repairs at the highway shop: brick wainscoting has been added, contractors will address a recent window leak, and the facility, now about 22 years old, has required rust-related repairs. Committee member Bill asked about warranties; Pat said there is no current warranty coverage and noted the facility age.
On equipment, the department received a 2025 chassis that will be outfitted with asphalt box, plow, underbody and wing equipment to function as a winter maintenance and haul unit. The department plans to convert one existing vehicle to accept a purchased "storm-extreme" unit (1,700-gallon liquid capacity and roughly eight tons of rock salt) and currently operates two such units on State Highway 21 and State Highway 13 north.
Staff also reported filling two truck driver/operator positions, creating a vacancy in the shop that is in the applicant-review stage. The committee did not take action; staff agreed to continue project oversight and return with updates.
